Meet our Instructors

David McCaslin – Band Director

Mr. McCaslin has been an active music teacher and band director since 1975. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education at Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah, OK.  He did graduate work at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK where he was the assistant director for two years.

His experience includes all grade levels from kindergarten through university.  He began his teaching career in Oklahoma and came to California in 1987.  He has taught marching band, concert band, jazz band, orchestra, piano, guitar, vocal and classroom music.  Mr. McCaslin joined Highland High School’s Instrumental Music Program in 2009.


Brian Almiron – Assistant Band Director

Brian Almirón has been involved in music programs since the fourth grade. He was a member of the Highland High School Marching Band for all 4 years playing Baritone Saxophone and Marching Percussion, has also performed with the Antelope Valley College Marching Marauders (Baritone Saxophone & Tenor line), California State University at Northridge Marching Percussion Ensemble (Front Ensemble) , West Coast Sound Drum & Bugle Corps (Bass Line), Royal Cavaliers Performing Arts (Percussion), Antelope Valley College Symphonic Band (Baritone & Tenor Saxophone) and was the Percussion Caption Head for the Royal Cavaliers Performing Arts. Brian has been part of percussion & visual staffs in Southern California and Arizona since 1998. 

Brian is currently attending Antelope Valley College pursuing a degree in Music Education.


Nick Bley - Percussion Caption Head

Nick was born and raised in Tucson, AZ. He first began playing percussion in seventh grade and has been involved in marching bands and indoor percussion ensembles throughout college.
Nick attended the University of Arizona where he studied Aerospace Engineering and marched snare with the Pride of Arizona Marching Band, marched three seasons with Breakthrough Indoor Percussion (Snare), and was the Percussion Instructor/Arranger at Walden Grove High School in Sahuarita, AZ. Nick is currently a Flight Test  Engineer at Edwards Air Force Base.


Corin Uchuion – Front Ensemble Instructor

Corin was raised in Ventura, CA where she first picked up percussive studies in the fifth grade. She graduated from Buena High School with involvement in various concert and marching ensembles for each of her four years. Corin has been a member of the Washington State University percussion studio—performing with ensembles such as the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, and Indoor Drumline. Corin has also performed with Dark Sky Percussion (Front Ensemble), and the Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps (Front Ensemble and Assistant Drum Major).

Zianya Valdez - Colorguard Instructor

Zianya graduated from Highland High School in 2015, participated in the marching band program for all four years, spent one semester marching saxophone and the rest dancing and spinning with the color guard becoming  captain her senior year. In 2016 During second semester, she returned to Highland to help the color guard staff.
Zianya is currently attending College of the Canyons to pursuing a Bachelors of Science in nursing. She is beyond excited to be an official staff member for the program and continue leading the color guard members to success.

Joscelyn Teran – Colorguard Instructor

Joscelyn Teran graduated from Highland High School in 2016, was a member of the colorguard for three years, guard captain her junior year, then became a captain her senior year, After graduating Joscelyn continued helping the color guard staff. She is currently attending Antelope Valley College for a Bachelors of Science in nursing to become a Nurse Practitioner. She is beyond excited to be an official staff member for the program and continue leading the color guard members to success.
